Personally I consider secret ending a disappointment. If you (probably not you since you've taken a look at the guide) ever thought 'oh i'm going on a perilous journey across the world to collect everything I need' then answer is no, it's mostly 'pick this option in dialogue and don't pick another or you instantly fail'.
I think the transition to devil from either aeon or azata should be in act 5 after returning from the abyss. Atleast for azata it is true, eventually your "inconspicuous " advisor will be starting a quest where you need to talk, for azata depending on your answers previously given you can change as far as I know or you have to fight him.
